Sony recently announced a new optical drive patent, which mentions a detachable optical drive device that may be used in the new PS5 model previously circulated.
The patent information lists an optical disc drive that can be installed in electronic devices such as game consoles, personal computers or audiovisual equipment. “The optical disc drive allows for a transfer roller position manipulation mechanism, a centering mechanism and a chuck pulley operating mechanism while allowing for a reduced number of components.” Although the new PS5 model is not mentioned in the description, this certainly adds to the credibility of previous rumors.
The PS5 game console will undergo a relatively major revamp in mid-2023, with the new console to be launched around September 2023. The source said the console is codenamed “D chassis PlayStation 5” and features a removable optical drive.
